Although the official deadline for ratification has passed, there are still groups advocating a 'three state strategy' to continue the push for ratification. By 1977 a total of 35 states had ratified the amendment, three states short of the required 38. ![]() Minnesota was one of eight states to ratify the ERA in 1973. Although ratification was never a guarantee, many states (such as Minnesota) did substantial legal work behind the scenes to prepare for the effect on Minnesota laws should the ERA take effect. The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) that passed both houses of Congress in 1972 contained three simple components: equality of rights cannot be denied due to sex Congress shall enforce the amendment and the amendment would take place two years after ratification. But still, a minority of Senators are hiding behind the Senate’s archaic rules instead of saying what they really mean: they’re against equality.Legislative History: From its inception in 1923, the Equal Rights Amendment highlighted the conflict between women's groups who advocated for legislative equality for all, and other women's groups who favored protective legislation for women. “A bipartisan majority of Senators are now on record in favor of affirming the Equal Rights Amendment as valid and removing the time limit, reflecting the will of the vast majority of the American public. “Upon learning that the Senate did not vote for cloture on SJ Res 4, the bipartisan resolution to affirm the validity of the Equal Rights Amendment, ERA Coalition and Fund for Women’s Equality President and CEO Zakiya Thomas released the following statement: ERA Coalition Statement on the Senate Failing to Advance Bipartisan Resolution to Affirm the Equal Rights Amendment and Remove the Time Limit The ERA Coalition Board, newly chaired by former Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, and the Fund for Women’s Equality, newly chaired by Jamia Wilson, represent a diverse group of civil rights and equality leaders and advocates nationwide. The ERA Coalition and the Fund for Women’s Equality announced that Ben Crump and Lisa Ann Walter are joining the organizations’ boards. We’re working to ensure both houses of Congress vote on these resolutions in this legislative session.ĮRA Coalition, Fund for Women’s Equality Boards Welcome Ben Crump and Lisa Ann Walter On Januthe House of Representatives and Senate introduced joint resolutions affirming the validity of the Equal Rights Amendment and removing the time limit from its preamble. And Virginia ratified it on January 27th, 2020. But in 2017 Nevada ratified the ERA the first state in 40 years to do so Illinois ratified in 2018. While Alice Paul began it all in 1923, and Congress passed the ERA in 1972, by 1982 only 35 states had ratified, three shy of the necessary 38. There has been extraordinary progress in the movement toward full equality. Our team of legal scholars has examined the next steps to a fully realized Equal Rights Amendment. We work with legislators on the amendment and other ERA bills. We strategize with states seeking ratification. The ERA Coalition is comprised of more than 290 national and local partner and supporter organizations across the country representing millions of advocates working for the equality of all. Our goal is to amend the Constitution to ensure that one cannot be discriminated against because of one’s sex.
