![]() Now to talk some design! Izumi’s distinct micro-braids and curvaceous figure aid greatly in making her memorable. That strength has permitted her to live the ordinary life she chooses with her loving husband Sig. The only martial artists would probably be the Homunculus Wrath and maybe Scar. The only alchemists who can claim superiority would be Father and Von Hohenheim, both of whom are living embodiments of the Philosopher’s Stone (so they don’t really count). ![]() Izumi has yet to meet her match in battle, be it alchemy or martial arts. Throwing a giant bear during her month-long training in the Briggs Mountains may have been a joke, but throwing the 12-foot-tall wall of superhuman muscle that is Sloth into the ceiling wasn’t. After seeing her in action, even some of the other scary characters are stunned by her ability. She is shown capable of holding her own against some of the most powerful foes in the entire series, single-handedly taking down threats that held off armies of soldiers. More beatings come, of course, and Ed & Al still fear her with their lives, but they know Izumi will always be an important figure to them.Īs proven over the course of the series, Izumi’s monstrous strength is no joke. She gives them a hug, knowing full well the pain these boys have suffered. That she would actually turn Alphonse’ armor body into a doorstop. That this time when she throws Ed a hundred feet into a wall, his soul would actually leave his body. Knowing Izumi and knowing the small amount it takes to set her off, one would think the Elric brothers coming to her after having become dogs of the military and committed the greatest taboo of alchemy would actually be enough to make her kill them. The boys’ attempt at human transmutation cost Edward his arm and leg, and Alphonse his entire body. However, despite her best efforts, she was unable to prevent the boys from committing the same transgression she attempted. The knowledge of the wrath awaiting the boys when they show up on her doorstep is a great motivator to solve problems for themselves without needing to rely on her. She has trained self-reliant individuals, not just student imitations of herself. Their teacher has taught them to fend for themselves, to look deeper into the way of the world, to find truth in the smallest of things, and continue to explore the world of alchemy. She truly loves those boys like the children she could never have and it’s clear they have an understanding of that connection. The other result of the ritual was her newfound ability to perform alchemy without the need for runes or a transmutation circle.įor the endless amount of hilarious jokes showcasing Izumi’s volatile personality, the scenes with her sitting at the dinner table listening to the Elrics are just as heartfelt. The thing she created in the center of her transmutation circle would haunt her forever. In her case, some of her internal organs were taken, leaving Izumi in a condition unable to produce children and prone to violent illness for the rest of her life. The ritual to give life to her son failed and Izumi would be forced to “pay the toll” for her transgression against nature. Wrought with pain and desperation, she would attempt the greatest taboo in alchemy human transmutation. During her last attempt at pregnancy, she became seriously ill and the baby failed to survive birth. After numerous attempts to become pregnant all failed, Izumi was believed to be barren. The secret behind Izumi’s condition is a painful story. Even when she throws up blood after an outburst, we can still only see her as a strong figure, not the human pain underneath. Truth be told, it’s so much fun to only reference her terrifying side that we easily forget (or refrain from discussing) the other side of Izumi. She is not nearly as good at selling herself as “a simple housewife” as she is “a demonic fury”. Said “unspeakable” qualities usually fall apart upon introduction when we learn said character is an ordinary person. It’s a wonderful example of an “unspeakable” character, someone to be referenced at earlier points in the story but without revealing too much too soon. A powerhouse of feminism, wisdom, beauty, and unbelievable skill she declares herself to be no more than a simple housewife. ![]() The parent figure they respect most as well as the human being they fear above all others. Edward and Alphonse Elric’s teacher in alchemy, philosophy, and life Izumi Curtis. Now here is what a perfectly realized character looks like. Great Characters: Izumi Harnet Curtis ( Fullmetal Alchemist)
